Construction logistics

In order to resolve the complexity of site deliveries and the entire transportation and unloading of goods, Daimler together with the other investors set up its own logistics center at Potsdamer Platz, a new company entitled baulog GmbH. All of the companies involved in the construction were obliged to adhere to certain rules to ensure a mode of construction that was compatible with urban life, efficiency and environmental concerns. Above all, this meant that all construction materials had to be delivered by rail and unloaded at the railway stations specially built for this purpose within the logistics center.

A private site road was constructed to link the railway stations with the sites, as well as a bridge over the Landwehr Canal and four bridges over Yorck Strasse. This meant that up to 42,000 truck-kilometers were saved every day. Everything was brought to the Potsdamer Platz construction area by rail, from dismantled cranes to diggers, large-scale equipment such as pontoons or containers, silos and cable drums.

In the years 1994 through 1998, nearly 1.4 million tons of concrete and half a million tons of other goods were transported in this way. The site had its own concrete plant. During the same period, nearly 6 million tons of excavated earth left the city by rail or via the Landwehr Canal.
