Even Hollywood stars love this cult classic!
It’s been 21 years since the first version of World of Warcraft launched in Europe and changed the gaming world forever. Dozens of awards followed, a spot in the Guinness World Records, and to this day more than seven million active players.
On March 2, the newest expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight, will be released. For the first time, players will be able to move into their own in‑game homes. To celebrate the launch, WoW is taking over The Playce from January 31 to February 7, 2026, transforming it into a pop-up World dedicated to the legendary RPG. Fans can look forward to cosplay, popular streamers, and exclusive giveaways.
Not a fan yet? Don’t worry — it’s absolutely worth stopping by, even for newcomers. And if you want to prep a little beforehand: here are five fun facts about World of Warcraft to get you excited.
World of Warcraft is massive, complex — and beginner‑friendly
WoW is what’s known as an MMORPG — an online role‑playing game played alongside thousands of others. You start by creating your own character, choosing between the dark (horde) or the light (alliance) side, and then taking on quests solo or joining a guild.
Sounds like a lot of options and maybe a bit overwhelming. But World of Warcraft comes with a wide range of difficulty levels. If you’re not ready to jump into battle right away, you can start with simple quests to learn the mechanics at your own pace: collecting berries, hunting boars, or delivering important messages.
Lots of celebrities play WoW
One persistent rumor claims that WoW is only for socially isolated people who live online. The South Park episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft” certainly didn’t help. In reality, WoW players come from all walks of life.
Rapper Bushido admitted years ago that he’s a huge fan. During the pandemic, Dua Lipa posted her first WoW steps on Instagram. And Hollywood stars are known to pop onto the servers regularly: Henry Cavill, Mila Kunis, Vin Diesel — even Jamie Lee Curtis has spent hours in Azeroth.
Azeroth is a treasure hunt for movie and TV fans
Azeroth is packed with Easter eggs. For example, there’s a character named Harrison Jones, who sends you on quests inspired by Indiana Jones.
Fans have also spotted nods to Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the TV show 24. One of the most touching tributes: an island in the game world was named after the late actor Robin Williams, who was himself an enthusiastic WoW player.
WoW is part of a larger gaming universe
Blizzard Entertainment, the studio behind WoW, laid the foundation for its success years before release. The earlier Warcraft games are also set in Azeroth and feature characters familiar to WoW players.
After WoW became a global phenomenon, the universe continued to grow. Today, it also includes the digital card game Hearthstone and the mobile game Warcraft Rumble.
The world of WoW extends beyond games
In 2016, "Warcraft: The Beginning" hit theaters worldwide. There are also audiobooks and novels ranging from lore guides to full‑fledged fiction.
One thing is certain: World of Warcraft continues to grow even after more than 20 years. If you want to experience it for yourself, stop by The Playce from January 31 to February 7. You can find more info about the Pop‑Up World HERE.
When winter outside gets grayer than a Monday morning in Orgrimmar, things get all the brighter inside: World of Warcraft is settling in at The Playce for one week – from January 31 to February 7, 2026, daily from 12–8 PM.
To celebrate the new game expansion World of Warcraft: Midnight, part of The Playce transforms into its own WoW House, complete with giveaways, epic decorations, and cosplays that'll make you forget whether you're in Berlin or already wandering through Azeroth.
And as if that weren't reason enough to leave your apartment: On February 6 and 7, a real highlight awaits: A meet and greet with some of Germany's most popular Twitch streamers. The faces you usually only know through your screens will be standing right in front of you.
So, quest accepted? Then grab your guild and stop by the House of Warcraft at The Playce, whether you're a hardcore gamer or a curious Azeroth newbie.
Admission is free, adventure included.
