Krunsch: From Venezuela to Berlin

Krunsch brings Venezuelan cuisine to the Manifesto Food Market: homemade, gluten-free – and true soul food. We spoke with founder Geraldine

At the Manifesto Food Market a wide range of international cuisines come together. Anyone strolling through the aisles will quickly realize: this is not just about getting full – it’s about discovery and the entire culture around food.

One true insider tip: Krunsch. This stand reimagines Arepas – cornmeal patties that are common in Venezuela. The fillings? Everything from classic chicken and avocado to vegan options with beans, cheese, and plant-based meat. Everything is fresh and made with love.

Geraldine co-founded Krunsch with her husband Camilo. We spoke with her to find out what makes a truly great Arepa and the philosophy behind their concept.

What’s the idea behind Krunsch?

Our specialty is Arepas, a traditional Venezuelan dish. The base is cornmeal, which makes them naturally gluten-free. Every Arepa is freshly prepared and can be filled individually.

What makes a good Arepa?

They should be crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and of course – well filled. We have classics like beef, pulled pork, chicken with avocado, but also vegan options with plant-based meat, beans, or cheese.

Are there regional differences?

Yes! Arepas are also popular in Colombia, but they’re often served open-faced there, more like a sandwich. In Venezuela, we fully stuff them.

When’s the best time to eat Arepas?

I love them in the morning or in the evening. But they also make a great lunch – one Arepa is filling enough as a full meal.

Are there any typical side dishes?

Yes, we offer Tequeños – Venezuelan cheese sticks served with a homemade sauce.

If I can only try one Arepa, which one should I order at your restaurant?

Definitely the “Reina”! It’s our Arepa with chicken, avocado, lime, and cilantro. The Reina is clearly our bestseller. But our vegan options are also really popular. We’ve noticed that people are curious and open to trying new flavors.
