From Slovakia to Berlin - the story of The Streets

The Streets is Berlin's new hotspot for basketball culture. We spoke to store manager Alec Zambori.

COE could be an excellent job title for Alec Zambori - Community Over Everything. In reality, he is the store manager of the newly opened The Streets Berlin on Potsdamer Platz. But it is more than just a shop: The Streets is a unique concept around streetball culture. Not only can you buy the necessary equipment, you can also shoot hoops right outside the door and chat to like-minded people about the latest streetwear trends.

The Streets started in Slovakia in 2009 as a grassroots movement by a small group of streetball enthusiasts - then under the name AND1. Today there are stores in three countries. In addition to balls, basketball equipment and lifestyle sneakers, The Streets offers streetwear from top brands such as Jordan, Nike, Adidas, The North Face, Converse and Vans. But one thing has remained the same since day one: the focus on community. ‘From people to people’ - that's our philosophy, says the store manager. We asked him five questions about the opening:

What makes The Streets different from other shops?

That we are first and foremost a community. We're not so much about profit. We are more like our name: The Streets. Keep it low key. Keep it humble. For the people. Basketball is much, much more than a sport to us.

What sneaker trends should be on our radar in 2025?

In Berlin you see New Balance everywhere. Over here you see a lot of Adidas Campus. You could say that what goes around comes around. For example, the old Puma models: they have now rethought the Suede as the Suede XL, which is more of a skate shoe. In general, there is a lot of hype around skate shoes at the moment. Everything big and chubby. Ultimately, though, everyone should find out for themselves what's new for them in 2025.

What do Berlin and Potsdamer Platz mean to you as a new location?

Berlin is of course a big market for a Slovenian brand. We are a small company. It's a very, very big step for us - like landing on the moon. Potsdamer Platz is great for us because historically it was the centre of Berlin. We hope that we can add some extra spice to Potsdamer Platz, for example with our basketball courts. Both we and the current concept of Potsdamer Platz are: New. So let's get along!

Speaking of Berlin: Franz or Moritz Wagner?

Franz! The greatest German basketball icon is, of course, Dirk Nowitzki.

How can Berliners become part of your community?

Drop by, have a chat, we're always here for you! We're looking forward to the summer: when the weather gets warmer, we'll definitely have some events planned. Stay tuned!
